Dear AWVCS Parents,
Time flies! We are halfway through the school year already! We have several exciting
events and school news we would like to share with you. Please take a minute and
note the following activities:
a) Chinese New Year Cultural Fair at the Oregon Convention Center, Saturday,
January 24, 2009 10 am - 6 pm We invite all AWVCS students and families to attend
this annual Chinese New Year event hosted by the Portland Chinese Times. Last Sunday,
all students were given 2 FREE tickets and COUPON to the event. If you can't attend,
please share your tickets with a friend! This event is usually very entertaining
and culturally enriching,
b) School Closure: There will be no school on Sunday, Jan. 25, in honor of
CHINESE NEW YEAR, Year of the Ox, on Monday, January 26, 2009. Do take the time
to share Chinese New Year with your friends & families. Chinese New Year lasts for
15 days, and each day holds a special significance - Learn more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_New_Year.
c) Snow Make-up Classes will take the place of the third class period on
these Sunday dates: Feb 8 and 22; March 8; April 12; and May 3. These additional
class times will help each class get caught up with the lessons missed during the
inclement weather or late starts. Please reconfirm the dates and times with your
teachers.
d) GENERAL MEETING on February 1, 2009 at 2:30 pm, will be held right before
AWVCS Chinese New Year celebration and potluck. This is a very important meeting
to decide on this year’s election process to elect THREE positions –
Principal; PTO President; and PTO Vice-President. We need your attendance in order
to get a quorum to vote. It is important that you attend this meeting!
e) AWVCS Chinese New Year Celebration will be held during the third class
on Sunday, February 1, at 3:20 pm, right after the General Meeting. Program will
include special entertainment and a potluck.
For the potluck, we encourage parents to bring Chinese New Year or specialty dishes
(if possible). We would have placards for you to write down the meaning of the dishes,
if you like to share its significance. In turn, this would be culturally educational
to our students and non-native families. Please coordinate with your class parent
representatives, assignments are as following:
Main Entrees: Levels 1/3/5 classes Dessert: Preschool/Phonics/Level 2 classes
Side Dishes: Levels 4/Advanced classes Drinks: Cecilia Wu to coordinate
AdministratiAdministration team will provide plates, napkins utensils, cups, etc.
(Teachers do not need to bring a dish.)
f) SAVE THE WEEK! AWVCS Summer Camp - 1st week of August (M-F). Planning
has begun for the annual week-long summer cultural camp. This year, we will once
again get special guest teachers from Taiwan who usually bring with them great material
g) Registration for Spring Semester. Registration for Spring Semester was
due on Jan 18, parents who have not registered your child/children for the semester,
please do so when the school reopens on Feb 1st. Enrollment form can be downloaded

親愛的家長們您好:
時間過得飛快，本學年已經過了一半，校方有以下的活動及消息要通知各位，希望大家花點時間來閱讀下列之活動訊息。
a )新春年宵會：1月24日 星期六 10am-6pm 於 Oregon Convention Center 舉辦。我們邀請學校所有的師生參於波特蘭新聞所舉辦這個一年一度的中國新年盛會。上個星期日(1/18)校方發給每位學生兩張入場卷及折價卷來參於盛
會，若您因故無法參加請將入場卷等轉送給其他有興趣的朋友。這個活動不僅內容豐富有趣更能幫助我們了解中華文化。 需要義工：該會提供給本校的攤位上，有許多的校方行政及家長代表們加入照顧攤位的值班行列，但我們仍需要更多的家長義工協助，特別是下午班的值班人員。
b )中國新年放假：這個星期日(1月25日)因中國新年本校依照慣例放假一次，1月26日為牛年大年初一，大家可以和家人及朋友一起歡度新年。依照習俗中國新年一直延續到15日的元宵節，這中間的每一天都有其特殊的風俗及意義，若有興趣請上

c )暴風雪補課通知：本校因招逢暴風雪停課2次及Hanna Hall施工而延遲上課，為了趕上正常進度，校方原則上訂於2月8日及22日、3月8日、4月12日、5月3日的第三堂課補課。確切補課時間請和各班老師再行確認。
d )召開家長大會：2月1日2:30pm本校新年活動及Pot luck前召開重要的年度家長大會，此次會議主要目的是選出下學年(2009-2010)的三個重要職位(校長、家長會長及副會長)，為達到法定人數請家長們務必出席此次會議。
e )本校新年慶祝活動：緊接著家長大會後，校方將於3:20pm有特別的新年慶祝活動及Potluck。關於Potluck校方歡迎家長們可能的話，準備應景的相關年菜。若家長願意分享年菜的意義時，現場我們會提供卡片讓家長們填寫。在享受美食的同時又可以達到寓教於樂的效果，特別是針對小朋友及不講中文之家庭是很有教育意義。各班家長和自己班代表聯繫，至於各班準備的Potluck請參照下列表格：

f ) 中華文化夏令營：將預定在8月的第一個禮拜(星期一至星期五)舉辦，照往年一樣舉辦為期一周五天的中華文化夏令營，今年我們會從台灣邀請專業老師準備最好的教材及教具來為豐富我們夏令營的活動。
g )春季班(下學期)：報名已在1月18日截止，若您的小孩尚未報名請務必把握在2月1日當天註冊報名，報名表請在http://awvchineseschool.us/Doc/Spring09_AWVCSenrollmentForm.doc.下載。

Dear Parents:
Due to unpredictable weather condition this Sunday (12/21), the school will use
our website (http://www.awvChineseSchool.us) to notify parents about school closure
by 9 AM on SUNDAY. (Please refresh your screen for current info.)
Furthermore, we will increasingly rely on our website as medium to inform parents
about upcoming events and emergencies. If you have limited internet access, and
would like to continue being notified by phone, please let your class representative
know.
Since we missed our fund raising event last Sunday (12/14), IF the school
meets this coming Sunday (12/21), we will sell non-perishable items between 1:45
pm and 4 pm in the lobby of Hanna Hall, Clark College instead.
For those who are interested in food and bake sales, please feel free to send your
orders to Kathy Chang at Kathy.Chang@awvChineseSchool.us. The orders will be fulfilled
when the school reopens on Jan 4th.
However, if we have to close school this Sunday (12/21) due to inclement weather,
our holiday fund raising event will then be cancelled for this year. For any questions
about this fund raising, please contact Kathy Chang.

We will hold a poetry recital as each year, welcome you to participate and join
this special event, the detail as following:

- Students will recite their favorite Chinese poems to parents, teachers and their
fellow students. Pre-school students may choose to sing Chinese songs in groups.
- Individual performance (speech, song, poetry, or anything creative and in Chinese)
will be awarded. We will give a participant prize for each contestant for his/her
hard work.
- Audiences will vote their best performers at the end of the performance, and the
academic director (Shin-yi or Jing-Ling) will give awards to the top 3 students
who get most votes from the audience.
- If your child would like to register individual performance, please contact with
Kathy Chang(recreation director) before the 1st class start at 11/16 (Sun).

- 家長觀眾可以在個人表演結束後投票表決選出前三名的最佳表演者，校方將贈送特別獎給前三名的表演者。
- 報名方法，請於11月16日上課前通知活動組長張士宜。

Re: October 26 "After-Exam'
Party
When: 3rd Class

We cordially invite parents, students and siblings to participate in an after-exam
party on Sunday, Oct. 26 during the 3rd Class Period. Some parents questioned
the name "Halloween Party" or they do not participate in Halloween; so we shall
call it a Fall/Harvest Party. We would like to clarify that this is really not a
"Halloween Party" except for the concept of getting candy. We have structured
it to be more of an educational experience.
1) Friendly Costumes:
Students can bring friendly costumes
to change into for the third class. Preferably no costumes during exam (too
distracting). Friendly costumes are OK with preschool class who has no
mid-terms. Students get a stamp for wearing 'FRIENDLY' costumes and extra
stamps if their parents or siblings come in costumes too. Nothing scary, please!
2) Pumpkin Contest:
Students are encouraged to bring a decorated pumpkin from home to enter
into a pumpkin decorating contest. Students get a stamp for bringing
a decorated pumpkin and there will be prizes for 1st/2nd/3rd places.
3) Chinese Scavenger Hunt: Classes
will travel through 6 stations with their teachers where they will be asked to perform
a task (chinese school -related activity e.g. count in Chinese). And classes
collect treats for their performances. Then they gather back into the lobby to hear
who are the winners of the pumpkin competition and check out their loot!
4) Fundraiser:
(If we can get this organized in time) Please note that one of our parents will
be selling CHESTNUTS, freshly picked
from their yard (price TBD). The Sheldon family has designated all proceeds
to the American West Vancouver Chinese School. A very special thank you to
the Sheldon Family!!!
5) Upcoming Event: Poetry Recital
during 3rd Class on November 16 (more details to come). Families, please note
that there will be NO general meeting that day. The next
general meeting will be in February 2009.
Good luck with your students' exam preparations. We look forward to seeing
everyone at the "AFTER-EXAM" Fall / Harvest party!

Spring semester will start on January 20. Enclosed is the registration form. Please
register with Kathy Chen early.
On February 3, we will have some activities to celebrate Chinese New Year during
the 3rd class at the school. We invite you to celebrate the arrival of the new year
with the students, and to enjoy some excellent performances. On Feb. 3, the students
should arrive at the school at 1:30p.m. as usual. Chinese New Year activities will
start at 3:20p.m. and will last one hour in the Great Hall at the Chinese School.
Please join us that time and bring a dish to pass. (POTLUCK)Thank you.

春季期末訊息發布
YEAR-END NEWSLETTER
JOIN US AT THE YEAR-END AWARDS CEREMONY ? SUNDAY, JUNE 8
Last Day of School ? June 8: Final examinations will be held during the
1st and 2nd classes from 1:30 ? 3:20 pm. Awards Ceremony will follow at 3:30 ? 4:20
pm in the Hanna Hall Auditorium.
We invite all family and friends to join us as we celebrate the successes of the
AWVCS students. In addition, this would be a great opportunity to meet your new
school officers for the 2008-2009 school year.
We thank all our parent volunteers and participation in the school events throughout
the year. Your dedication and commitment to the school helps the students and the
school succeed.
We are very proud of our students who have worked very hard this year, giving up
their Sunday afternoons for Chinese lessons. Have a great summer, and we look forward
to seeing you this fall!
SUMMER CHINESE CULTURAL CAMP (July 21-25, 2008)
We invite our students to learn more about the Chinese culture and heritage at the
2008 Summer Chinese Cultural Camp. This year?s cultural camp will feature Chinese
teachers who will be teaching a range of activities from Chinese painting, calligraphy,
arts & craft, Chinese yo-yo, and a range of Chinese folk dances. The Summer
Chinese Cultural Camp will conclude on Friday, July 25, with a cultural performance
for family & friends, followed by a special opportunity to perform at the International
Festival on Sunday, 7/27.
We welcome all parent volunteers, please see Michelle Liang, 2008-2009 AWVCS Principal,
if you are interested in participating. Native & non-native students are welcomed.
Ages: 6-17. Please wear tennis shoes and bring a sack lunch.

NEW CLASSES SLATED FOR FALL; EARLY ENROLLMENT BEGINS
American West Vancouver Chinese School is accepting new students for 2008-2009
school year. AWVCS is dedicated to educating students in speaking, reading and writing
the Chinese language. AWVCS typically offers 7 years of formal progressive Chinese
education from Phonics to Levels 1-6 (ages 5-18). An optional 3rd class offers to
enrich academic learning with cultural experiences including Chinese calligraphy
& painting, folk dancing, arts & craft, Chinese chess, Chinese yo yo, &
much more.
PILOT PROGRAM: Three additional new classes are scheduled to start
this fall, contingent on the number of registered students. The optional 3rd class
will also be available to the following new classes:
- PRE-SCHOOL CLASS introduces Chinese to Mommy/Daddy & Me for
3-6 year olds with their parents.
- CONVERSATION CLASS for students of all ages who simply want to
learn how to converse in Chinese.
- ADVANCED CLASS for students beyond Level 6, especially those
requesting for Level 7 and SAT II classes.

American West Vancouver Chinese School will soon have it new website up and running
under the domain name of AWVchineseSchool.US by June. We know that our parents are
often asked to describe AWVCS to their friends; now, you can send them to the website
for information, registration forms & more.
THANK YOU TO OUR AWVCS OFFICERS We appreciate your participation in the recent AWVCS
election. We are currently transitioning to a new slate of AWVCS administration
officers, headed by Principal-Elect, Michelle Liang, and Vice Principal-Elect, George
Kanchanavaleerat.
A special thank you to current Principal Alice Chang and her administrative team
of Michelle Liang, Yu Chen, Kathy Chang, Cassie Huang, Beshia Popescu, Marion Wong
and Bernice Ho. Many thanks also go to our PTO President LiLing Chen, PTO Vice President
Star Wang, and PTO class representatives.
We look forward to your continued support and participation in AWVCS. Our goal,
as always, is to promote the learning of the Chinese language and promote the Chinese
cultural heritage.
